In Dead as Disco, gamers become a zombie coated in glitter in a neon-lit, post-apocalyptic city. Here, music-based fighting, fashion-driven development, and cool survival techniques come together in a fabulous undead feast. The main activity is “beat-synced slaying”. A throbbing synthwave soundtrack accompanies each fight with an enemy. You need to hit your attacks, dodges, and special moves perfectly to the beat for extra damage and combo boosting. If you miss the rhythm, you’re exposed to counterattacks, and your “groove meter” will also get drained. Instead of old-school health, there’s your “fabulousness” meter. When you get hit, it goes down, but you can fill it by doing stylish poses, picking up glitter lying around, or doing great finishers where slow-motion, glitter-exploding arcs of flying enemies are a common sight. Discovering areas is done through the “Disco Districts”, five luxuriously decadent zones (Glitter Gulch, Neon Bazaar, Boogie Sewers, VIP Skybridge, and Rave Reactor), each one packed with different traps like spinning mirror balls reflecting laser grids, confetti bomb-triggering dance-floor pressure plates, and sound-reactive obstacles that move in sync with the music. Getting better at the game is through “outfit grafting”, finding cloth, sequins, and leather on dead enemies, allowing you to make new costumes, each bringing a set of unique powers: platform shoes for making bigger jumps, shoulder padding for reducing damage, or glow-in-the-dark cloaks for going unnoticed. The “crowd approval” feature keeps an eye on how showy your kills are; attractive, stylish kill combos lure ghostly disco-ball NPCs that float around and, from time to time, drop rare items. The “disco fever” gauge increases as you make kill combos; when full, you go into “Boogie Rage” mode, giving you invulnerability, endless stamina, and doubling all loot for a limited time. The multiplayer “Disco Royale” pits 20 players in a gradually shrinking arena where health is given to those on the dance floor, and a “wallflower penalty” comes with standing still too long.
