Far Cry 2: Fortune’s Edition is a richly immersive, open-world shooting game. The setting was designed with a war-torn African landscape where individuals are dropped with just one single-minded objective: to eliminate a notorious arms dealer known by no other name than the codename given to him: the Jackal. The game focuses heavily on realism and survival as the player has to navigate a very hostile environment with sprawling enemy factions, deadly wildlife, and dynamic weather. Whereas most shooters do not, Far Cry 2 does; it introduces something called a mechanic- the players are afflicted with malaria and must work with it as malaria needs to be treated with medication if they want to live.

Combat is gritty and unyielding, with weapons that have a degradation system, meaning they may jam or break at crucial times. This vast map can be explored on foot, by boat, or by vehicle, and each mode of transport is more vulnerable to damage, so the player has to repair it or find another route. Missions are open-ended, so players don’t have to follow any fixed scenario but may go for guns blazing, or they may plan some ambushes or go for stealthy tactics.

The game has one of its strongest aspects in fire: The real-fire physics allows players to burn grass and buildings down- a beautiful thing, but also a particularly interesting way to cause chaos and strategic advantages. Its harsh environment, detailed graphics, and focus on survival elements make Far Cry 2: Fortune’s Edition a very difficult and immersive take on the open-world shooter genre.
