The hunting career in Hunting Unlimited 2011 takes players through four continents: North America, Europe, Africa, and Australia. However, what makes the game stand out in the series is an improved animal herd system with more realistic scent trailing and a newly built trophy room. The main game mechanic is simply “herd hierarchy simulation.” Every animal herd consists of dominant males, subordinate females, and children who behave differently. When the alpha buck is killed, there will be a 2-day “chaos period” in which the younger males fight for dominance, thus their movement patterns become very unpredictable, making it easier for the hunters to set up ambushes. The old tracks, which were glowing, are replaced by the scent trail system, which comes in the form of gradient heatmaps; a fresh scent is very red, and it cools to blue for 45 real-time minutes, and rain completely erases all trails, so that you have to track game visually. Also, now wind has an effect on the scent by the terrain features: a valley for the most part carries your scent downstream, while a ridgeline will create an updraft which will carry your smell uphill, so that you always have to be aware of your elevation. Furthermore, the introduction of modular attachments to the weapons upgrade allows players to have scopes with variable zoom (for woodland 3-9x, for the prairie 12x), bipods for stability while lying down, and muzzle brakes, which are very effective in reducing recoil but at the same time increase the distance at which a game can be spooked by the gunshot (up to 400 meters). The “call and response” mechanism allows players to interact with the game in real-life situations: different calls from one species to another (deer grunt tubes, elk bugling, predator distress whistles).
