AGAINST is a game that lets players take on the role of a tormented soul stuck in a harsh, grey, concrete purgatory. Here, rhythm-based fighting, poetic storytelling, and brutal hand-to-hand combat are blended into a very stylish action-platformer. The main gameplay revolves around “beat-murder synchronization”; not only is every enemy confrontation set to a loud, industrial music rhythm, but you also have to carry out your light, heavy, and parry attacks perfectly in time with the musical beats, which are shown visually as pulsating rings around your character. Off-beat hits result in lesser damage and breaking your combo multiplier, whereas parrying the perfect beat opens up a counterattack window in slow motion. You are wielding a “remorse-chain”, a living weapon in the form of a spiked whip that gets longer with each kill in succession, so the reach increases, but the swing recovery also slows down; you are capable of shortening it manually by hitting the chain onto environmental anvils, thereby exchanging range for speed. Adventure happens through the “Ascent of Regret, ” which consists of four procedurally generated towers named Lies, Betrayal, Violence and Apathy. Each level of the towers features different opposing characters with new types of audio cues: for example, a crying nun uses her sobs to indicate when she is going to attack; a faceless judge will attack only on off-beats; and a child enemy on fire needs to be pacified, which can be done by not attacking for three full musical measures, instead of killing. The “guilt gauge” increases when you perform a staggered enemy (which is a brutal, slow-motion finisher). When the gauge is full, it brings about a “remorse overload” that causes the screen to go blurry and also reverses your beat timing for ten seconds, so that you basically have to fight your muscle memory. Boss fights change the style from rhythm battles to “confession duels”; you have to imitate the boss’s expression of their inner thoughts and soul through poetry by blocking when they speak the stressed syllables and attacking when they are silent. The multiplayer “penance race” mode is essentially a competition between two players who are given two separate paths; the player who is able to hit perfect beats will also be able to add obstacles to their opponent’s lane.
