Resident Evil (2015) is a brilliant remake from scratch of the survival horror original of 1996 that conveyed all the original’s horror and atmosphere, complex mansion layout, and the tension arising from rationing the scarce resources, while updating both the gameplay and the graphics for the new generation. Going back to the core of the series, the gameplay consists of slow burning, careful approach to survival horror where saving bullets is a must, every door may be hiding a new threat, and the Spencer Mansion is a gigantic and most intricate puzzle of horror. Your characters can be Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, both of them members of the S.T.A.R.S. team, and they are trapped inside a mansion filled with normal zombies, mutated monsters, and the traps of a crazy person. The fighting also feels deliberately awkward, a choice that raises the stress even higher. You can’t run and gun; you must stop to aim, your character’s stance shifting as they raise their weapon. Ammo is scarce, and enemies are tough. Often, the best choice is not to fight, but to conserve resources and flee, creating a constant, low-level dread. The fixed camera angles, a hallmark of the original, are preserved, creating dramatic, cinematic shots that hide enemies just around corners and add to the sense of vulnerability.
