Captain of Industry is a profoundly intricate and extremely gratifying industrial simulation game that lands you on a distant resource-rich island with only a few loyal workers and the goal of turning that island into a self-sustaining industrial empire. The gameplay is a very detailed, systems-driven type that will reward the player who does careful planning, efficient logistics, and has a good long-term vision in mind. You might employ bulldozers to clear land, excavators to mine ores, and trucks to haul raw materials to your factory areas that are ever-expanding with smelters, assemblers, and chemical plants. The “Terrain” system is the islands’ way to put you up against some of the most quiet interesting challenges. The island is not just a place to exist; it becomes a resource that you can change. You can mine mountains for iron and copper, set up large quarries to get stone and coal, and after that use the waste rock for building terraces for new factories, reclaim land from the sea for additional farmland, or even construct massive retaining walls to reshape the coastline. Logistics is central to your whole operation. You will be tasked to come up with efficient designs of conveyor belts to move the raw materials from the mines to the refineries, managing complex truck routes to avoid traffic jams. Eventually, you will be building a railway system that will connect the different mining outposts with your main industrial hub. A single blockage in the supply of iron ore can lead to the stopping of the whole production chain, leading to the halting of steel production. Steel is then needed for the construction of new vehicles, which will be used for the expansion into new resource-rich areas, and as such, a halt in steel production will directly mean the halting of the expansion of the industrial operations.
