Backmooms is a surreal, first-person exploration game whereby the ordinary suburban life is slowly altered into a nightmare consisting of endless, identical houses, no one around, and the feeling of being watched. The game is a slow-burning, atmospheric trip through a procedurally generated, infinitely sprawling suburban neighbourhood where every house, street, and cul-de-sac is a subtle, unsettling variation of the one before. You start in a seemingly normal suburban home, but as you step outside, the realisation dawns on you that you cannot leave the neighbourhood. Every road leads back to where you started, every alley shows you the same set of houses, and the few other figures whom you see from a distance, a gardener, a woman with a dog, a child on a bike, are frozen, as if they were statues, or disappear when you look away. You must search the identical houses for resources—food, water, batteries for your dying flashlight—while navigating a world where the laws of physics and reality seem to bend. The game’s signature “Stillness” system tracks how long you remain motionless or hidden; standing still in the shadows for too long triggers a low, droning hum and the sensation of being watched, while moving too quickly or making noise attracts the attention of the “Neighbors”—tall, faceless humanoid figures that patrol the streets and will relentlessly pursue you if spotted. A masterclass on subtle horror is represented by the environment that is changing. The flicker of light creates a starkly different atmosphere from what existed moments before. The direction the lawn gnome is facing has been changed to a different position from what was previously there. A child’s toy lies in the middle of the street where it was before. The story is told through notes left in various places, disconnected radio broadcasts, and the sparse interactions with the frozen entities. The frozen entities are heard occasionally speaking small, incoherent statements. This unique experience demonstrates that real horror cannot be found in a monster, but rather in a quiet understanding that you are now imprisoned in your own home (once familiar to you) and no longer alone within it.
