The Humans: Meet the Ancestors! is a charming, deceptively challenging puzzle-platformer that lets you control a small tribe of prehistoric humans as they evolve through 80 levels. Your tribe will use its primitive intelligence and growing teamwork to tackle the obstacles in the environment. Gameplay is an adorable combination of crowd control à la Lemmings and creative, physics-based puzzle solving. You have a few cavemen under your command, later on, more evolved hominids, traveling through side-scrolling, prehistorically illustrated dioramas, which depict everything from dense primeval forests to perilous volcanic plains. Observation, planning, and execution form a rewarding cycle. You don’t give each human direct commands; rather, you send out basic instructions like “move, ” “pick up, ” “use, ” and the game’s special “call” mechanism that summons lazy tribe members to a spot. The troglodyte may have to pick up a rock to put a pressure plate down, so another troglodyte can get across a bridge; the more advanced Neanderthal may fish with a spear or use a torch to scare away a saber-toothed tiger. The game’s most notable feature is the progressive evolution system. As you move through the ages, your humans evolve, acquiring new skills and tools. For example, “Groke” cavemen who only grunt and carry objects can, with time, become “Zog” and “Ag” tribesmen who are capable of making tools, using fire, and even constructing simple structures, thereby adding new dimensions to the puzzles. The delightful, cartoonish pixel art and the fun sound effects establish a casual vibe, but, in fact, the puzzles gradually become so complicated that they require excellent timing, very good coordination, and thorough knowledge of each human’s abilities. You can also download DrainSim.
