One Way: The Elevator is a brilliant example of how to do psychological horror in a confined space. It throws you into a single elevator that keeps going down forever, where you have only your brain, a light that keeps coming on and off, and the growing feeling that you are not alone. The game takes away all the extras and leaves you with the essentials, keeping you in a single, very detailed elevator car, which becomes a place where you feel very paranoid and desperate. The main gameplay is a stressful circle of looking, doing things, and trying to stay alive; you can push the buttons for different floors, but the elevator keeps going. These things give you tiny pieces of information that tell you about the dark history of the building and your being there, which you don’t remember. The “Presence” system, a major part of the game, is where it all really gets scary; the way the elevator acts depends on what you do and, it seems, on its own evil will. The lights might switch off completely so that you would be in total darkness. A weak, distorted voice might come from the ventilation shaft. The elevator itself might be changing in small ways, a new stain on the floor, a scratch on the wall that wasn’t there before, or the temperature dropping several degrees. There are no weapons or monsters to fight—only the creepy, psychological fear of the unknown. The story is told through such environmental changes and the not very clear and unsettling audio logs that you sometimes get from the elevator’s faulty speaker system. This minimalist and very focused type of game shows that real horror does not require large areas to wander in or people suddenly jumping out at you, whereas a small, closed room and the frightening power of suggestion are enough.
