A Slit of Joy is a deeply personal and experimental first-person narrative that takes players through the silent spaces between grief and healing, involving players as those returning to their childhood home after a heartbreaking loss. The gameplay is a calm and reflective rediscovery walk through a very detailed, half-empty house where even the tiniest things tell parts of memories. No enemies, no clocks, no classic puzzles, just the quiet, natural interactions with the surroundings. The main feature is the “Echo” system; the moment the player starts to interact with different familiar stuffs, such as an old armchair, a dusty record player, and a partially written letter, the background world changes in a very subtle way. The colors might turn to grayscale in isolated rooms, and soft murmurs of old conversations might be heard. The player may see translucent, ghostly figures re-enacting, for a short time, moments of the history they shared, only to disappear when the player gets closer. You can also download Beyond Eyes.

The house is, on the one hand, a maze of memory with doors that only show up when the time is right to open them and, on the other hand, hallways that change in length, getting longer or shorter depending on the emotional state of the person, and this is only subtly helped by a very simple interface and a very beautiful, haunting and very responsive to player’s actions soundtrack. The only aim is to find “joy”; one shouldn’t think of it as a point where one arrives, but as a set of moments scattered in the house. Joy might be hidden in the sunbeam through a window, in the warmth of a cup of tea that one can make oneself. On the one hand, silent, almost, even wordless and very much personal, on the other hand, the game characterizes its interactive spaces to talk about very important and, unfortunately, all too often human, universal themes like loss, memory and the slow and even zigzag path towards being able to feel joy again without any help, thus showing that sometimes even the most powerful stories are the ones told by very quiet voices at best and are almost inaudible or whispering ones at worst.
