Over The Top: WWI – war romanticism is removed to give an utterly harrowing, tense atmosphere, trench survival experience through which the player leads a small band of soldiers in the deadly, muddy wasteland of the Western Front. The gameplay centers more on stealth, strategy, and survival, leading a junior officer through complex trench networks, no man’s land craters, and destroyed villages of one of the most tragically destructive wars in history. A very tense cycle of recon, planning, and execution is at the heart of the mechanics; using periscopes and observation posts, you have to scout enemy positions carefully. You and your squad will have limited supplies of ammunition, food, and medical kits so that you can lead them on raids in darkness or the confusion of an artillery bombardment. “Stress” is the main element of the game, measuring each soldier’s mental status; being shelled for a long time, witnessing fallen comrades, and always facing death can result in shell shock, a soldier’s revolt, or a total mental breakdown, which makes a player rotate troops and manage morale just like in the case of ammunition. Combat is extremely harsh and one-sided; a sniper’s bullet can easily kill a soldier you have spent hours developing, while bayonet fighting is so desperate that chaos and the element of surprise weigh more than aim. Large tracts of time between the missions are spent at the command dugout, providing first aid to the wounded, preparing letters for those soldiers who are dying, and making very hard decisions as to which of your limited resources will be used for which objectives.
