Carnival Massacre takes the nostalgic joy of a county fair. It turns it into a bloody, first-person horror-comedy game where a player is a helpless fair visitor figuring out how to survive a bunch of murderous carnival game characters, crazy mascots, and haunted prize booths. The gameplay is a crazy, physics-based run through a large, neon-lit outdoor fair that actually tries to catch you; you will get lost among a maze of cotton candy stands, funhouse mirrors, and tilt-a-whirls, and to defend yourself against attacking attractions, you will have to use makeshift weapons such as a broken hockey puck, a spiked carnival mallet, or a flawed skeeball launcher. The main novelty is the “Game Over” mechanic; each foe is a demonic twist of a traditional carnival game, which means you have to find the right tactics for the fight. For example, a ring-toss demon might hurl fire rings that you need to evade, while a living whack-a-mole game would endlessly generate moles from underground, and in this situation, you will have to destroy the mole-generating device. The setting is very interactive and dangerous; for instance, you can cause rides to fall on the enemies, throw water balloons at the electrical games to fry their circuits, or use the mirror maze to trick the ones who are after you, all the while trying to keep track of your limited tickets which is the game money for buying health and upgrades from a strange, impartial fortune teller. In between intense survival scenes, you get to know the ill-fated story of the carnival as shown in scattered audio clips and twisted calliope tunes, unwrapping the sad experiment that gave life to the attractions.
