Welcome to Doll Town, which turns the charming dollhouse simulator into a scary psychological horror game where you are a newly hired caretaker for an isolated, old Victorian manor filled with unnerving porcelain dolls that look alive and move when you are not watching. The gameplay is basically a very careful, first-person routine of domestic work that gradually becomes a paranoid nightmare; you basically dust delicate figurines, wind antique music boxes, set up tiny tea sets, and record each doll’s position in a diary, all the while a subtle “Anomaly” system notices the changes, the doll’s head now turned towards the wall, a tiny crack in a ceramic hand that was not there before, that gradually turn from mildly disturbing to really threatening. The main source of tension is the “Observation” mechanic; the dolls only move when they are not watched, thus you are forced to set up period-appropriate cameras, leave room, and come back quickly, or use mirrors to keep watching your work area while you are at it. Besides these household tasks, you dig up the house’s sad past through the found diaries and broken phonograph recordings, which tell you about the downfall of the last caretaker and the dolls’ link to a dead child. When your sanity level is dropping after each unexplained event, the environment itself starts to glitch, corridors become endlessly long, doll laughter can be heard from empty rooms, and the dividing line between caretaker and collected specimen disappears. The skilful merging of boring chores, building terror, and smart AI behavior results in a very personal horror experience where the most frightening monster is the firm belief that you are no longer alone in a house full of things that should not be alive.
