In The Strange City, the environment is as fluid and shifting as it is in the dreams. Navigating and progressing through it is up to the players. San Miguel is a living, breathing city that frequently changes the layout of its streets, alleys, and buildings, as players are made aware of through the gameplay. It’s a dangerous and exciting game simultaneously, where hidden doors and secret rooms are located far beyond seemingly unrealistic tricks of perspective and behind actual concrete walls. Players constantly find themselves using tools and collected items in the environment to alter the city’s architecture and get to the layers of the world. Pretty much any location you can find in the city carries an aura of mystery, which compels the players to learn even more about the game’s mysterious theme.

Players must make decisions since they meet numerous mysterious inhabitants and creatures during their gameplay. Some provide obscure guidance or help, while others are unfriendly, giving tasks with obstacles that can be solved only by sneaking, fighting, or talking. Players can converse with individuals in branches that determine the game’s future events, or a particular conversation may directly seal the character’s future. These moral standings make this interaction more complex as the alliances and betrayals change the player’s physical reactions in the city. This character and environment interaction reality makes the issue an elaborately woven fabric of interrelated experiences.
