The Night Cleaner turns a janitorial simulator into a tense and creepy thriller, which takes place in a huge, old office building that is falling apart and is only open at night. You do your job cleaning, but the building has other plans. The way you play is a slow, first-person game that starts with daily chores and turns into your mind falling apart; you start working at midnight with only a mop, bucket, and a walkie-talkie with the boss, who will seem more and more strange and less reachable by the time the night is over. Basic stuff is actually the main loop: you throw away the rubbish, mop the stains, and bring supplies to different rooms such as offices, toilets, and corridors. The light in the janitor’s closet is flickering in a way that looks like it is spelling something.” In between such increasingly strange things, you come across scattered employees’ records and altered security videos, which reveal the terrible past of the company and the story of the experiment that is the horror of these corridors after working hours. The “Cleanliness” meter, which is very emotionally impactful and typical of the game, creates a very scary situation; if you stop doing your cleaning, the building will get even more hostile, but if you hurry too much, you will get to dark, scary places where you cannot tell if what you see is real or a hallucination. The combination of doing everyday things, the fear getting bigger, and the story being told through the environment is so good that it results in a very personal horror experience where the scariest monster is the growing realization that you are not alone, and haven’t been for a very long time.
