The Mortuary Assistant is a terrifying horror game that presents the players with a horror world of Rebecca Owens, who is a mortician working the night shift in the creepy River Fields Mortuary. The game combines psychological terror with a detailed simulation as the players execute realistic embalming procedures such as injecting fluids, setting features, and suturing incisions. At the same time, supernatural forces slowly take over the place. The game’s Dynamic Haunting System means that no first and second run-throughs of a game are the same, as the demonic entities can change their behaviour depending on the player’s actions.

Thus, they can be hiding in shadows, whispering threats or even messing with the corpses. An intense Occult Investigation mechanic implies that the players need to solve the riddles of the cryptic clues that they discover, find the possessed bodies, and make safe the exorcisms that they perform by using ancient rituals, all this while coping with Rebecca’s slowly decreasing sanity. The mortuary even sounds like it is present, with the lights flashing, the shadows changing, and the terrifying ambient sounds going up in volume, all this plays a part in the escalation of the fear feelings.

With time going on, the night distorts reality—the corpses might come to life, the reflections will act on their own, and the invisible hands will be pulling Rebecca to the dark. The game’s Multiple Endings depend on the major decisions, such as trusting or not trusting the spectral visions or making a pact with the devil. Thus, every choice becomes a risk of winning over losing. The Mortuary Assistant, with its disturbing atmosphere, brainy scares, and nauseating level of detail, has given a new definition to the horror genre by showing that even the most mundane tasks can become a struggle for your life.
