In “The Henchmen, ” players are given the role of a disposable henchman in a world full of huge supervillains, and where third-person combat, tactical, base management, and storytelling loyal to each other are combined in a darkly humorous action-strategy game. The main game loop is based on “mission requisition.” Your villainous boss will give you different criminal tasks (heists, sabotage, kidnapping, asset protection) with randomized objectives and environmental variables such as security drone patrols and rival hero interventions. You are in command of a four-person squad of customizable henchmen, each having a distinct skill tree (demolitions, hacking, stealth, or combat) that you lay out for specific roles before each mission. Fighting is happening live, but there’s a “pivot-pause” mechanism that helps you perform very specific commands even in a fight; you can attack enemies from behind, lay traps, hack turrets, or call air support. The “boss favor” indicator tells you how far you are with the villain; finish missions promptly, and you get access to a powerful arsenal, recruits, and story branches; in case of failure, you get humiliation, or worse, death. Exploration takes place in the “Criminal Underbelly, ” a huge city district that has safehouses, black markets, and warehouses. Each of them provides opportunities for a “side hustle” to get more money and reputation. The “loyalty system” keeps track of the morale of each henchman; doing a great job for them, saving their lives, or fulfilling their personal goals allows you to unlock their ultimate abilities. “Base upgrades” give you an option to improve your hideout by adding new training rooms, armories, and medical bays. Multiplayer “heist clash” has two villainous crews competing with each other to be the first to secure the target. Since permadeath is on for each henchman, but it is your boss that brings you back to life (for a price), The Henchmen is a combination of a first-person shooter and a role-playing game, a cruel, funny, and very tactical story of an underdog.
