The Empty Eyes is a first-person psychological horror game that takes the player into the shoes of a journalist who goes to investigate a cult’s abandoned compound, only to realize that the real terror is not in the things that are hidden in the darkness, but rather in the ones that are staring at you from the shadows. It provides a gameplay that is layered with a slow-burning tension of getting paranoid through an atmospheric setting which revolves around the game’s scary mechanic that getting eye contact with the white, empty eyes of the cult’s painted portraits, ghostly disciples, or the few living members would cause an instant and deadly psychic shock. Eye contact also becomes a very risky move since you are navigating through the broken and ritual-decorated parts of the house by keeping your eyes off the twisted faces and using mirrors, puddles’ reflections, and carefully set camera angles to observe the places without facing the scary pairs of eyes directly. The surroundings are done exceptionally well in an oppressive way; each story of the cult’s brutal, tragic, and bloody history is told by the peeling wallpapers and blood-stained altars, which are found through letters and disturbing sounds that you have to listen to while constantly checking your side vision. The challenges are very natural and put you on edge of your nerves, asking for different things to be done, which then further keeps you from taking a direct look at the items, such as coupling the signs while looking through a broken mirror or finding your way in a labyrinth through only the distorted reflections in a shiny metal. With a unique vision system, the game’s signature “Echo” feature makes it so that whatever actions or path you take, they are not lost, but rather your past movements manifest as ghostly after-images. You are thus faced with the dilemma of whether these are your shadows following you or if you are losing your mind.
