Slitterhead’s gameplay is a dance of chaos and psychotic transformation that marries rage-fueled fighting with the horror of the mind to provide an oh-so-unique case. The gamers assume the role of a deformed, parasitic being who can body-hopping between unsuspecting human hosts that are each with the abilities, strengths, and weaknesses of their kind. Combat is a wild jig of dismemberment and metamorphosis—tearing foes with one’s claws, teeth, and makeshift weapons, then smoothly stealing new bodies mid-battle to become the perfect match to the situation. The “Possession System” of the game adds a strategic dimension: Are you the one who hides in a fragile human to be unnoticed, or do you become the monstrous creature and thus, you can both make sure that you are comfortable and still be able to kill through the masses?

Stealth and trickery are at the forefront, with the entity taking on human characteristics to fool those who want to hunt it or get-away, while kills from the environment and grotesque finishers become the reward of being creative. The dying city of Slitterhead is a horror playground cluttered with hidden lanes, destructible objects, and creepy secrets that respond to your touch. Fear is fueled by the player’s fear of encountering the game, an Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) score, and a plot that goes from body horror to existential dread, unlike anything the player has experienced before. Each battle comes like a surprise; each change is permanent, and that is how Slitterhead is turned into a fun, albeit gory, fiction experiment of hybrid horror-action.
