ROMEO IS A DEAD MAN takes the rhythm-action genre. He turns it on its head by telling the story of a revenge thriller deeply rooted in the narrative, set to the energizing soundtrack of an underground synthwave movement. The player is Romeo, a resurrected enforcer, and the game follows him as he navigates through neon-drenched, rain-slicked districts of a futuristic city. Here, fight moves depend on the tempo of the music; firing rounds at the downbeat charges a “Fury” meter, and dodging to the snare hit just at the right moment will open brief, bullet-time windows for counter-attacks that inflict great damage. The essential feature is the “Requiem” system; enemies, when killed, will drop audio logs that, on being collected, add new instrumental layers to the game’s changing score; thus, the soundtrack turns into a real reward for the player’s combos and exploration. The boss fights are musical duels in several stages, where you are required to memorize and work against each enemy’s individual rhythmic patterns.
