Project Zomboid takes a zombie theme and turns it into a hardcore survival-grinding real-life simulation, creating a hardcore isometric sandbox where, outside the unlocked window, in the backyard, a couple of zombies can be a death sentence in Knox County’s zombie apocalypse. It is a continuous, moment-to-moment fight against chaos: you go to the houses in the suburbs looking for the food in the cans, medicine, and books to level up the skills while you have to satisfy a long list of needs such as hunger, mood, boredom, and especially the “Zombification” timer if bitten, which turns even the toughest survivor into a permanent member of the horde. The major depth of the game is in its systems you have to figure out how to hotwire the cars by reading skill magazines, treat wounds with sterilized bandages, observe the change of seasons and temperature that will have you crafting winter coats, and secure your safehouses with barricades while tuning in to the Emergency Broadcast System for weather news that will affect your travel plans. Fighting is heavy and takes a lot of energy. You can handle one zombie easily, but a group of zombies shows that you need to use stealth, carefully plan your path, and also the strategic use of noise to lure them away, plus every weapon from baseball bats to axes breaks down realistically with use. This ruthless, open-ended simulation can be played alone or in a huge multiplayer community where players create extensive bases, establish survivor factions, and eventually see their digital lives fall to the undead.
