Presidential Beatdown is a satirical, over-the-top brawler that has gameplay such as beating the fantasy arenas, but it downgrades to the political battlegrounds of Capitol Hill and the Oval Office. The players can choose from the list of the most amusing and grotesquely exaggerated characters of U.S. presidents. For each of them, a set of movements is creatively linked to their historical personalities and political legacies. Action in the game is a chaotic combination of fighting with one’s bare hands and “executive action” special moves, e.g., Abraham Lincoln can summon a ghostly log cabin for defence. At the same time, Theodore Roosevelt can attack with a “Bull Moose” rush. Ronald Reagan may deploy a “Trickle-Down Economics” aura that causes slow damage to all opponents.

The arenas are the interactive political landscapes where the player can, for instance, throw an opponent over the Resolute Desk, initiate a government shutdown that changes the stage, or take a filibuster power-up that makes your character invulnerable and endlessly verbose for a while. The primary means of fighting are intentionally heavy and funny. The developers focus on the most noticeable, slapstick hits—just like a perfectly timed presidential pardon that cancels out an opponent’s super move—all of this in a cel-shaded art style that is reminiscent of partisan cartoons. It’s a game where winning a debate is just turning out to be knocking your adversary to the podium, thus converting political theatre into a raucous and profoundly ridiculous drama of power.
