Plants vs. Zombies (PvZ) is a very innovative and tactical tower defense game in which the players have to protect their house from a series of funny zombies by planting various strange weaponized plants. The action takes place on a grid-like lawn divided into lanes, with the zombies marching relentlessly towards the player’s house. All of the plants are different—sun-producing Sunflowers generate the in-game currency, Peashooters fire projectiles, Wall-nuts block zombie advances, and explosive Cherry Bombs clear entire lanes. Different types of levels, such as day, night, pool, and rooftop stages, bring in many new challenges that require players to change their strategy and bring new plants like Mushrooms (that are more effective if used at night) or Lily Pads for watery areas. On their part, zombies also come with a set of new tricks—coneheads, bucket heads, pole-vaulters, and even dancing zombies that summon backups—thus keeping players alert.

Plants vs. Zombies with a blend of real-time strategy, resource management, and humor, PvZ manages to strike a balance between being accessible and having a deep gameplay that goes well with the rewarding placement of smart ones, the timely upgrades and the clever use of the instant-kill plants such as Potato Mine or the mighty Cob Cannon. The game’s draw is the ridiculous yet fulfilling mechanics that make each level of play a charming and challenging test of one’s survival against the undead.
