Painkiller is an amazing, loud and proud throwback to the 90s fast-paced, arena-shooter style, and it doesn’t try to hide its roots by focusing a little bit on story, but rather it goes all out with the action. The whole gameplay is centered around one cruel, but very relaxing loop: you are thrown into a vast, usually Gothic and industrial-themed arena, the doors are locked, and you have to kill every one of the hundreds of grotesque monsters that are attacking you from all sides. There are no health pickups; you can’t carry more than two weapons here.

The only way to survive is to keep moving all the time in a totally crazy, but very effective manner of strafing and, at the same time, use the limited ammo of your small, but highly original and twisted weapons. Every firearm in the game has its regular shoot and a very powerful alternate fire, the most famous “Painkiller” being a motorized blade that shoots bolts at enemies, and if one of the blades can’t be removed from the enemy while the entire blade spins, it simply shatters into pieces. Besides the emotional figure of the combat, the game Painkiller offers an extra strategic layer through the “Soul Capture” system and tarot card mechanics. The soul of an enemy is released only after its death, and after collecting a certain number of these spirits, a demonic “Battle Mode” that resembles a powerhouse-hulk kind of transformation and that lasts only for a short period of time is activated. Additionally, by completing a local track (like finishing a level in less time than the given one or killing all enemies with a specified weapon), you get black tarot cards. These cards can be activated before the level to grant the player different and very strong buffs that change the game substantially, like double damage or all the enemies are frozen, and the player can do what he likes, thus an extra layer of replayability and player-selected difficulty are added that put the player in a position where he can be the ultimate agent of chaos.
