Ostriv sets itself apart from other city-building games and decided not to use a grid system that is common in the genre, thus allowing the players to create villages with a more natural flow and texture that are not only stunning but also true to the Ukrainian style, and not to mention that they adapt to the beautiful and rolling terrain. The main part of the economic gameplay is an in-depth, agent-based simulation of a circular economy, where each item is unconditionally tracked right from the farming of a specific wheats to the tanning of a certain cow, and this tracking is done physically as the products move by carts from producers to warehouses, workshops, and finally to the market stalls where the villagers have to buy them, thus, creating a complex network of logistics and dependency, and you do not control it with abstract overlays, instead, you do it by physically placing and funding the cart routes and storage barns.

Realism is the main theme in this game and it is also present in the agricultural system where a very detailed and specific three-field crop rotation plan is a must if one wants to maintain soil fertility and prevent famine that can be catastrophic, and also, the construction part of the game needs you to control a lively and paid workforce that can only be obtained from other jobs and not by magic, therefore, you are required to manage the wages and the living conditions in such a way that the workers that are crucial to your projects are actually working on them.

Citizens of the games where the characters are reduced to numbers and stats are nowhere to be found in this game, for in this game, the developer has made sure “the people” are a unit of simulated individuals with their own homes, families, skills, savings, and needs; it means a drought that will lead to a poor harvest is not just going to lower the food meter. Still, it will bring about the situation where certain families can no longer afford bread. As a result, they might relocate, thus your labour force will have a death spiral. This, in turn, makes Ostriv a game that is more about the difficult, hands-on management of a living, breathing community than creating an impressive metropolis.
