Organized Inside is a first-person puzzle game that is highly atmospheric and psychological in nature. It plunges the player into the sterile, maze-like corridors of an unknown facility. Here, the single objective kept is to impose order on the chaos that is constantly increasing. The gameplay is a quiet yet gradually more intense experience of sorting, categorizing, and arranging a continuous flow of randomly generated items that you find in your stark, minimalist room. At first, you do simple work, you put blocks of different colors into corresponding bins, you file documents in alphabetical order, you stack geometric shapes by size, but as you go, the items get more complicated and emotionally charged. For example, you may have to group photos of people into “happy” and “sad” piles, or you may have to separate whispered phrases into “truth” and “lie, ” or you may have to put together pieces of memories that are surprisingly personal. The central gameplay is a gratifying but disturbing cycle of bringing order to chaos, only to have the chaos become even more personal and invasive. The game features a “Residue” system that is unique to it. This system records your feelings towards the sorted objects; if you linger over a certain photo, if you put a memory into the “forget” pile, or if you continually rearrange the same group of items, a faint trace of your actions will still be visible, a slight discoloration, a flickering light, a distant, whispered echo of your own voice. These residues build up, slowly changing the clean and perfect look of the facility and pointing towards a bigger and more disturbing story about the nature of the experiment and your role in it. There are no opponents, no jump scares, just the silent, gradually increasing feeling of horror from the realization that the things you are putting in order are not random, and that the order you are making is helping in doing the thing that you don’t understand. The story is told through these changes in the environment, as well as through the sorting terminal, where mysterious messages gradually appear and imply that you are not a participant but a subject.
