NBA 2K15 marked a turning point that put a major focus on the intelligent and organic flow of the game rather than its flashy aspects. To accomplish this goal, the developers added a complex and new AI system that required the player to take on a more coaching-like role, rather than just performing quick actions as a basketball athlete. One of the most important features of the game was the innovative “MyPLAYER” system, where the career mode was a storytelling simulation directed by Spike Lee, offering a non-linear plot, with the performance of your custom rookie and off-court decisions influencing not only the team chemistry and media perception but also your way to becoming a franchise icon or a team of a few minutes of a player like.

On the court, a “Face Scan” technology was implemented to create the photorealistic player models and the defensive engine was completely changed so that the reward is for the player who is disciplined in his positioning and anticipation rather than the one who keeps on spamming for steals; in fact, defenders now run through the screens that the offense set, help the defenders that are in trouble by rotating and contest the shot with a certain height which is very close to an actual vertical jump, thus making a very complex reasoning game at each possession.

This led to establishing a certain rhythm in which success was based on executing well-thought-out plays, interpreting the defense correctly for the best pass, and taking only those shots which had a high probability to score, thus being an almost identical representation of the strategic pace of an actual NBA game as opposed to the arcade-style run-and-gun of the previous years, thereby confirming NBA 2K15’s status as a basketball intelligence game of simulation above all else.
