MIO: Memories in Orbit reimagines the genre of exploration games by turning the player’s journey inside a decayed generation ship into a meditative, gravity-defying experience. The player controls a tiny maintenance drone that has just woken up to an empty ship where humanity is gone, and the vast, overgrown ecosystems on the vessel are slowly dying and falling into silence. The drone’s serene, physics-based movement allows the player to pass through the ship’s different habitats, from humid hydroponic jungles to zero-gravity observation decks, where the player can precisely control the direction of the drone’s engines and use magnetic adhesion to move along walls, drifting through places that were once full of life. The main activity is a slow, open-ended exploration of loss and memory, where you use your drone’s optical sensors to take pictures of the environment’s anomalies and, with every scan, you gain a “Memory Echo”, a short, faint replay of a crew member’s last moments, that eventually tells the story of the ship’s downfall and the desperate decisions of its inhabitants. The puzzles are natural and based on the environment that sets the player up for the ship’s malfunctioning systems; for example, the player can restore power to the elderly conduits, open a sealed hatch by redirecting solar energy to the reflector, or, with the help of the drone’s tiny size, enter maintenance shafts and bring back life support to forgotten areas. Acquiring memory fragments allows the player to gain new movement capabilities, such as short-range teleports or temporary gravity reversals, that unlock previously barred areas and thus increase the player’s immersion into the story of the disappeared crew. There is no fighting, no countdown, just the calm, sad act of seeing, all of which turns MIO into an interactive lament where each found memory is a small act of revival in the face of the vast cold indifference of space.
