In Mina the Hollower, players take on the role of a little vampire hunter, armed with a whip, navigating a cursed, clockwork island where old-school 8-bit visuals, expansive Metroidvania-style gameplay, and a detailed fighting system are all wrapped in a compact, enticing adventure. The main gameplay feature is “shard management”, which involves collecting bright shards from killing enemies and breaking things around you, which are both the game money and the fuel of your lantern, an essential light-source that not only shows you hidden ways but also weakens shadow-immune enemies and makes ancient machines work. Fighting calls for careful distancing and really nailing the timing: your whip makes a big circle, but your character is stuck for a short while; learning how to backstep and do slide cancel will give you the upper hand to lunge attacks of big enemies and the projectile shots of guards in the air. “Bite recovery” is a bit of the risk/reward tactic: you can get a quick grip on a stunned enemy to suck their life force and fill yours, but you also get open to the interrupt by other enemies close by. You will get to know the lost Spire of Whispers, the flooded Clockwork Tunnels, and the overgrown Ashen Garden as your journey unfolds, each of them having a maze-like environment requiring a mix of platforming skills and locating keys. Defeating a boss gives you a “core fragment,” which, by adding to shards, will grant you new abilities to explore different ways, one that lets you cling to walls, another one is a charged dash, and the last one is a downward stomp capable of breaking loose floors, which, in turn, allows you to break sequences and is highly rewarding. The “hollowing curse” is the ever-present danger: if you stay in darkness for a long time, it will steadily take your maximum health away; so, you will have to balance using your lantern or getting into a permanent stat reduction situation until the next save point. “New Game Plus” comes with shuffled enemy arrangements, quicker coming attacks, and the introduction of new exclusive equipment.
