Maktala: Slime Lootfest takes the loot-based action-RPG and throws it into a blisteringly fun and colorful world of fighting, crafting, and petting animals, where the landscape is a flexible, jelly-like material. As a Slime-Shaper, players take the role of in the Motion Picture Sprawl of Maktala, carrying a multi-purpose Gel-Gauntlet that lets them instantly make weapons, tools, and travel gadgets by getting and mixing the different characteristics of the numerous slimes that live in the area, for instance. These sticky adhesive slimes can be used to make grappling hooks, and volatile explosive slimes that are used to make area-of-effect grenades. Core gameplay is a fluid ballet of improvised combat and synthesis: you’ll bounce between slicing through oozing hordes with a blade solidified from crystalline slimes, to deploying a hastily forged shield of rock-slime to block a projectile, all while managing a “Gooberdex” of captured slime essences that power a deep, modular crafting tree. With increasing levels of loop, the noirs become more intense as you find yourself in wildly frenzied, procedurally-generated dungeons laden with environmental puzzles that can only be solved by involving the right elemental slime and boss fights that pit you against gargantuan Mega-Molds who if strategically taken down with your arsenal of synthesized weapons and “Slimebud” allies who in turn supply you with their unique buffs and abilities can be defeated. The constant sequence of harvesting, synthesizing, and adapting makes every game a colorful theater of complex but fun interaction where winning means getting the building blocks with which you make the next bright and magnificent gooey production.
