From a first-person perspective, the survival genre ‘Maid of Sker‘ tells its tale as a delicate interplay between noise and silence, where the main gameplay represents a stomp of avoidance and not of confrontation. The main enemies are the very hulks – Quiet Ones, who, however, being blind, have extremely sharp hearing, so moving is like death coming to you immediately and in a very nasty way. There is a special tense and a unique stealth mechanism that utilizes the player a bit like a breath holder that helps to muffle the sound of the heart beating and throwing noisemakers picked up from the environment to distract the enemies.
The game setting is also a new and vital character – the Sker Hotel from the Victorian period, which is a giant maze of shady corridors and cast-off doors where you have to work out some environmental riddles that are connected to the location’s somber historical musical-relations, and most of them require the player to operate the mysterious gramophone-like device to go forward in the game.
The most conspicuous thing is that there is no battle; your weakness is total, which means that every encounter is a heart-throbbing challenge of courage and temper as you hide in the darkness, listening to the harsh breaths and the dragging footsteps of the Quiet Ones who are just a few inches away, waiting for the perfect moment to slip by into the next pocket of temporary safety.
