Kill The Brickman completely reworks the boss fight genre by changing it into a punitively, physics-based puzzle brawl in which the primary weapon is just the environment. The Brickman of the title isn’t serving as a mere damage sponge for the player; he destructively combines the properties of a level hazard with those of an enemy living demolition machine that breaks the very place where you fight. Gameplay is a panicked dash of escape and taking advantage of the moment, where the main aim is not hitting the boss directly, but tearing down the structures to help him fall.
You have to trick him into doing his powerful and very clearly telegraphed charges on support columns that are important; avoid his earth-shaking attacks that will produce rubble, and if you get hit, you’ll be crushed; finally, throw the leftover pieces at your enemies as if they were bullets. Each fight is a hurricane of changing terms where the lessening of territory and the increased quantity of waste are impacting your tactical ways of dealing with it.
To win, one will have to be extremely aware of the space, be very accurate with the timing and use the boss’s own power against him, thereby creating a very gratifying loop of cause and effect that is more like a game of architectural dominoes than a battle.
