JAWS: Retro Edition takes you back to the pixelated, fear-filled ocean of Amity Island and gives you an 8-bit version of the movie that turned the summer into a blockbuster. The game is a top-down, suspense-filled adventure that recreates the movie’s famous man-versus-nature chase and lets you play as Police Chief Martin Brody, who is trying to stop the great white shark from killing more people. You explore a colorful, pixelated Amity Island that seems to be sneaky happy, from the beaches where the sun shines to the secluded, small bays, by using a simple boat that feels like it has some weight. The speed is slow as a reminder of the predator that is constantly underneath you. What you do most of the time is a series of stress-inducing activities like checking out the situation, getting ready, and facing the enemy. The island’s panic level is shown by the game’s famous “Terror Meter”; each time the shark attacks without the people seeing it or you miss the hunt, the level goes up which might cause the beaches to be closed, the people to run around nervously, and if you still don’t do anything, you get the “Fourth of July” game-over condition.
