Infection Free Zone distinguishes itself from others by the use of real-world geography to bring any part of the Earth into the game with OpenStreetMap data and, thus, visualise your own hometown or a well-known city as the background of a post-apocalyptic survival strategy game. Instead of having the gameplay start with pre-set factions, it begins with the most crucial and the heaviest task, i.e. selecting which building in the real world should be approved as “Infection Free Zone”. A well-constructed police station will give you defensive rewards and a hospital will lead to medical benefits, while a school can offer more space for survivors, but it can be harder to protect, thus your first decision will be really tactical and personal.

Every day, you are racing against time to manage a crew of uniquely skilled survivors. You can assign them to do vital jobs like scavenging resources from the landmarks which are not new to you but exist in the real world, researching the technologies for returning to the old world, manufacturing weapons and most importantly, constructing and fortifying walls for securing a perimeter that you have to keep on expanding to give room for the growth. However, the nights change the gameplay into a very frightening defence sim as the infected horde appears and throws several attacks on your walls.

It results in you placing your armed citizens who are on a watchtower or barricades strategically. Then you manage the limited ammunition and morale in the frantic, real-time battles, which are the battles where a single breach can turn the enemy into a devastating chain reaction of infection and panic inside your once-safe zone. This constant moving between daytime resource management and expansion and nighttime siege defence, which is all happening on the hauntingly familiar real-world map that you know, makes a deeply immersive and personalised strategic challenge.
