The experience of Iblis is terrifying. You must navigate through the desolate confines of a prison where only your candle illuminates the path to freedom. There is a mixture of exploration, puzzle-solving, and constant avoidance of being found out as you experience fragmented memories about how you got there in the first place and what may happen if you don’t make it out alive. Your focus for survival comes from your candle. It provides light for you to see the path, but it also serves as a beacon that reveals any shadows cast by your candle. These shadows have a personification, and they are alive with a darker presence. Iblis is the entity that haunts you and is only attempting to find you by lurking within the shadows that are created by your candle. When you stay in one place for too long, the shadows become thicker as they combine into an actual, malevolent being that will reach out and draw you into the darkness. You must continue to move, but if you move too quickly or without caution, it may extinguish your fragile flame. The environment is an example of oppressive atmosphere; the walls appear to exhale, the silence is broken by scurrying creatures not seen, and the echo of your footsteps in the darkness sounds like a heartbeat. The story progresses with fragmented whispers heard in the dark, coded messages that are carved into the walls, and brief glimpses of the world that are seen only at the time your candle flickers out. There are no weapons, health packs, or a specific route forward; only your instinctive need to find an exit before your light goes out and the shadows take you. This highly minimalist and focused experience exhibits the primal fear of darkness, illustrating that the greatest terror is not found in the creature that is seen, but in the one that is observed just down the side of your eye, just outside the range of your diminishing flame.
