Horror Maze takes you deep into a nightmare from a first-person perspective, with you trapped inside a procedurally generated, infinite labyrinth that is constantly hunting you and, finding out your fears through testing, it then twists its corridors to terrorize you the most. Gameplay offers a disconnected mental experience that repeats itself over and over, where your only possessions are just a flickering lantern and your smarts; you go through the narrow corridors made of rusted metal and decayed wood, while paying attention to the sounds signaling the “Maze Heart”, a living, pulsating entity that not only changes the environment but also closes the way by which you came and opens the new paths that are scarier than the previous ones. The main innovation is the “Fear Echo” system; the maze studies your habits, if you are scared to the point of not being able to look at something, if you have been hiding from the noises or if you’re staring at disturbing images, and from those, it creates your personal nightmares, from whispering walls that repeat your own thoughts to creature encounters designed around your specific phobias. Puzzle-solving is natural and based on the surroundings; for example, you may have to decode a bloody nursery rhyme by collecting the dolls that are hidden in the maze, or you might have to use your lantern’s limited fuel to highlight symbols that, for a short while, keep the entities at bay. The maze is divided into separate areas with different themes: a derelict carnival, an abandoned hospital, and a sunken chapel, where each setting has its own dangers and puzzle logic. As the layout changes, even when you come back, you will continue to get new experiences with each escape. Progression is based on “Memory Fragments” that you find, which are pieces of the story that explain what the maze is and that, if you gather enough, provide cryptic hints about the possible ways out. This blend of procedural generation, adaptive AI, and psychological horror delivers a very personal and highly replayable nightmare in which the walls are alive, and your own fears are what build your doom.
