Hell Clock is a strange and surreal, time-warping, and scary puzzle game where we, as players, must find our way through a dark and twisted maze that constantly changes, located within a cursed old clock. Every tick of the Infernal Mechanism bends the rules of nature. It changes the surroundings between the grotesque version of Victorian-era dirt and the crazy bio-machine creatures that serve as decor for the game; thus, players must come up with complicated, multi-layered solutions to the problems under extreme stress caused by a never-ending in-game timer. A prominent feature of the game focuses on controlling time in bits— going backwards, stopping, or speeding up the movement of some objects or parts of the scene while the rest of the world continues, thus, it is possible to experience logical impossibilities that thus, doors may be present only in the past or enemies may disappear if they are stopped in the middle of an attack.

The game’s scary nature is made even stronger by the dynamic noise scene, where the clock’s ticking is distorted until it sounds like the soft voices of the victims, while the life-distorted graphics blur the border between hallucination and reality. As the players progress further, they discover that the memory of the clock’s old prisoners is patchy; thus, they attempt to solve the riddle of guilt and repeated punishment once and for all by gradually understanding the cryptic mass of fragments. Due to the game’s roguelike elements, every replay is different. Interestingly, it makes Hell Clock still a challenging and dark journey where time is a double-edged sword—the most powerful and, at the same time, the most terrifying thing.
