Grounded 2 takes the gamers once again into the dangerous but fascinating toy world of the backyard with a massive upgrade in survival mechanics, cooperative play, and new terrifying ecosystems. The first time players battle The Hive was hence safer, a dynamic, ever-evolving threat where the insectains—now with the AI—swarm, strategise, and even lay traps based on the player behaviour. The game also brings in a feature called “Ecosystem Domination,” where killing specific predator species causes the food chain to be shifted temporarily, so that the prey populations will get higher in number, or some new apex predators will come. At the same time, the construction of objects makes a jump to the Modular Base Building, which is a way for the gamers to build a big, multi-storey castle with provisions such as traps, zip lines, and even one for farming if the plumbing is basic.

A revised Mutation System provides gamers with the opportunity to bio-harvest insect DNA for accessing their hybrid skills, such as mantis-like leaps or acid spit from the bombardier beetle; however, it should not be used abundantly as it will lead to The Infested’s admission, the grotesque, fungal hive-mind that corrupts creatures and terrain alike. Besides, the weather is very dynamic nowadays, thus playing a negative role; flash floods, for example, are turning puddles into lakes, and windstorms are throwing debris as if they were weapons.

The sequel also features Colony Mode, wherein four or fewer players can create a new settlement and divide responsibilities such as hunting, building, or science to obtain special skills and defeat big, specific-biomeraids of enemy ant colonies or spider swarms. The backyard has morphed into a larger one with the inclusion of new zones that are quite chilling, such as The Rotting Oak, a rotten tree that is full of parasitic wasps, and The Sunken Aqueduct. In this buried ruin place, water-strider mounts are imperative to get through the underwater obstacles.

One more thing is that the new Fear & Resolve mechanism radically influences gameplay—going through the scene of a teammate’s horrible death or getting caught in case of an ambush in darkness makes the phobias appear for a short period, while defeating the foes gives the receiver such boons as extra damage or fast crafting. The nighttime is a survival horror as the bioluminescent animals appear, and the players have to decide to take the firefly-lantern along or get hunted by The Lurkers, who are shadow-dwelling predators that are able to hunt due to the sound.

Grounded 2, due to a combination of its characters’ progression of development in the RPG genre, nerve-racking co-op challenges, and a world alive that reacts to every decision, revolutionises the backyard into an even more brutal and spectacular contest for survival.
