Gravethorn combines gothic horror elements with intensely challenging action-RPG style combat, and puts the players into the role of a penitent grave keeper, who is chained to a cursed living weapon that gets hungrier and also more powerful after each slain enemy. The gameplay is a very measured, yet intense, blend of soul harvesting and ritualized combat: you use the Gravethorn, a modular weapon that changes from a wide scythe to a rapier that stabs, and with a well-executed series of attacks, enemies release “Essence” which is then drained by you and you have to very quickly spend the Essence at one of the few shrines to increase your powers, otherwise, the weapon will consume you as it gets more and more bloodthirsty. There is a pretty large, spacious, and at the same time tightly interlinked necropolis consisting of mausoleums, catacombs, and blighted forests that can be unearthed through the “Epitaph” mechanism, i.e., by reading gravestones, one gets memories that in turn reveal secret paths and optional boss fights. A very interesting “Penance” system works here, too. It logs your ‘combat sins’, such as running away from fights or disrespecting corpses, and changes the NPC’s behaviour toward you. At the same time, it unfolds a storyline of either redemption or damnation; therefore, it is a fusion of Soulslike-style challenging gameplay, resource-management horror, combined with a morally responsive world-building that presents the player with an oppressively atmospheric journey where the sword is not only a saving tool but also a weight to one’s neck.
