FUMES is a game that pulls players into a post-apocalyptic nightmare wasteland where survival depends on the management of both physical and mental decline. The setting is in a world that is suffocated by toxic fog and filled with distorted, mutated creatures. The game is a perfect blend of survival horror with roguelike elements; thus, it is a never-ending, constantly changing nightmare. Each breath is like a bet on your life—if you go into the toxic Fumes without a gas mask, you will suffer from hallucinations and paranoia and then die excruciatingly, while staying too long in the “safe” places makes you use up more resources than you can get, thus you will have to make some nerve-wracking trips into the unknown. Fighting is extremely harsh, and it doesn’t allow for mistakes, as your makeshift weapons will weaken quickly.

There isn’t much ammo, so it’s better to use stealth, lay traps, and get into a melee fight only when you can’t avoid it; besides, the monsters will change as you keep fighting them. The game’s characteristic feature is The Corruption. This constantly evolving sanity system distorts reality: friends can become enemies, safe places may disappear, and the voices you hear may either lead you to safety or kill you. As the maps are created procedurally, there is no option to die and be resurrected, and the sound of the haunting synth-doom adds to the mood. FUMES is not only about getting out of the fog; it is also about staying alive through losing oneself in it.
