Echoes of Red is a narrative-driven puzzle game far too beautiful to be just a simple game. It is a game about a soldier’s memory fragments after he came back from a war that was forgotten by the world. To reconstruct a life that has been shattered by trauma, the game makes use of color, sound, and storytelling through the environment. Through the protagonist’s fractured psyche, the gameplay reveals the mind of the protagonist via a meditative first-person tour of a series of surreal, painterly landscapes. The main loop in the game is just a gentle cycle of exploring, interacting, and learning new things. You use a special “Resonance” ability in these memory spaces to walk around, say, a bright wheat field, a rainy street, a hospital room with no windows, that you can only reach after the door has been unbolted (which happens through the use of this ability that I just mentioned). The players will explore the environment as objects that, when touched, emit a faint hum, a brief audio fragment, or a visual echo. Gamers can recall these echoes as pieces of memory they hold inside themselves: a child’s laughter, a woman’s voice, the sudden sound of gunfire, the helicopters, etc. You can also download Pluto.

The game’s signature “Chromatics” system is its emotional core. The world is drained of color, a deliberate reflection of the protagonist’s emotional state. As you uncover memories, you don’t just hear them; you see them bleeding back into the world.
