DuckTales: Remastered is a heartfelt revival of the great 8-bit NES game. It not only preserves the original’s amazing gameplay, challenging platforming and adventurous spirit but also introduces hand-drawn animations, full voice acting by the original cast, and numerous modern improvements. Playing the game is similar to the original’s main gameplay as you once again become Scrooge McDuck, who is pogo-cane, hitting and bouncing enemies in an enemy-bouncing world, traveling through different locations. As I mentioned, the game is a classic platformer with five non-linear levels: The Amazon, Transylvania, the African Mines, the Himalayas, and the Moon. The pogo move is still a lot of fun and requires very good timing in order to bounce on enemy heads, break blocks, and avoid the deadly spikes. Besides, the remaster offers an optional “Mild-Mannered” difficulty, making it easier for players who are not much used to the original’s (almost ruthless) challenge. One of the main attractions of this game is a very detailed story. Every level is separated by gorgeous animated cutscenes featuring the original voice cast, such as Alan Young for Scrooge and Tony Anselmo as Donald Duck. Besides, new dialogues bring out totally new sides of the treasure hunting adventure as well as of the family at heart relationship. As you can expect, throughout each level, you will find “Level Treasures” that are collectible items consisting of gems, artifacts, and blueprints. I found the controls really precise and responsive; the pogo, swing, and climb the cane are so well designed that you get an excellent and enjoyable experience. One more feature is a health system and unlimited continues, which in fact makes the game easier, but without the loss of the original spirit of discovery. Showing such respect and affection, this beautifully done restoration captures the charm, the puzzle, and the heart of the original DuckTales.
