In DRUMGUY, the gameplay is a visceral and rhythmic dismantling of the hero fantasy, where you are not a warrior with a drum but a drummer whose instrument is his only weapon in a world that is violently in sync with his beat. The main feature of the game is the “Rhythm Realm,” which is a drumming world that comes and goes as you keep a beat by hitting your drum. It is a time when you can pass through the sceneries that were obstacles before, the enemies that were intangible turn into vulnerable ones, and the secret routes show up with every perfectly timed hit of your drumstick.

Here, in gory fights, you don’t just mash the buttons randomly; you have to maintain complex polyrhythms to succeed. You can give different drum pads different enemies (a snare hit for flying enemies, a bass kick for armored brutes, a cymbal crash for the groups to stun them). Then you have to combine these beats with your basic survival rhythm so that no one can tell you apart. Thus, you are creating a frenzied musical piece that simultaneously uses offense and defense.

The world, with its dangers of falling bridges, swinging pendulums, and shooting geysers of steam on the downbeat, is your metronome that compels you to “play” the environment if you want to go further. Your health is your energy, shown by a disappearing tempo bar that only fills up again when you perform perfect rhythmic sequences; thus, every confrontation becomes a high-pressure performance where one failed note can break your focus and make you vulnerable to attack in silence.
