DOOM 64 is a beautifully dark and atmospheric game, yet it remains unnoticed to a great extent. It connects the gameplay of old DOOMs, characterized by fast demon-murdering actions, and the new DOOMs that induce survival-horror gameplay. In this game, you are Doom Slayer, but without any help, you will encounter hellish demons on the space station. Gameplay still features elements like exploration, fast combat, and non-linear progression similar to previous entries; however, there is one very important difference: the mood of the game. The whole game is very dark, and the soundtrack is very calm with the use of low drones and whispers instead of the metal character of DOOM II. Level navigation will be done in very large and interconnected areas. Here, you will look for skull switches and colored keys, which will allow you to open new doors. At the same time, you will be fighting against the familiar but visually improved enemies. The “Unmaker” weapon is the game’s hallmark. It is also quite scary, a demonic item that produces a very powerful beam of energy and can be enhanced when you find hidden “Demon Keys” in secret levels. The “Laser” gun, yet another new weapon, releases a beam that can bounce from one wall to another, which makes it possible for you to do creative, indirect attacks. The structure of the levels is even more complex and focused on working out the riddles than the earlier games, with secrets being located behind false walls, floors being lowered to reveal hidden places, and dangers coming from the environment, such as flooring that hurts and ceilings that crush. The artistic design is quite different, featuring a dark, gothic style. Demons are made more horrible and textured, and the lighting system produces very deep and oppressive shadows, which are even used to hide enemies until you bump into them.
