In Directive 8020, players wake up as a malfunctioning biomechanical soldier inside a dead interstellar ark. On this ship, cosmic horror, environmental storytelling, and reality-bending puzzle-solving combine to form a psychological thriller. The main game loop is based on “neural fragmentation.” This means that you have a failing memory core, which causes a splinter in your perception of time, space, and identity. Finding your way through the ship’s twisted corridors, you’ll stumble upon fragmented logs, holographic recordings, and eerie echoes of a crew that has long been dead. Each of these pieces is a clue to the reassembly of the chain of events that led to the catastrophic failure of the ship. Your “failsafe” system is like a “failsafe” back-up as an internal guide; it provides cryptic hints and warnings. There is practically no fighting; instead, you depend on “retinal analysis, ” a scanner that interprets environmental signs and reveals hidden doors, trap triggers, or warnings about creatures that are out of sight. Your journey will take you around the “Starliner, ” a large ship divided into separate biomes: the Hydro-Gardens, a jungle-like area full of organic growth; the Bridge, where the ship’s AI keeps a close watch on you; the Cryo-Vault, a place where the passengers are preserved in frozen stasis; and the Dark Drives, a complicated maze-like engine room that changes its red light. Using the “memory-shard” feature, you can piece together past events by matching up different pieces of footage. “Echo-scanning” allows you to create a map of the ship, but since the ship’s corrupted systems keep rearranging themselves, the areas will differ from one visit to the next.
