Crazy Neighbour throws gamers into the shoes of a stressed-out homeowner in a crazy suburban street where horror and slapstick stealth are mixed as you try to get your lawn gnome back from a mad shoveling neighbor called Mr. Grimshaw. The main gameplay revolves around “distraction crafting”; you will have to search your backyard, garage, and even your neighbor’s trash for household items (garden hoses, fireworks, remote-control cars, and old paint cans) to create distractions that will lure Grimshaw away from his patrol paths. Although stealth remains a major factor, the game really goes for comedy: entering a trash can or hiding behind a hedge will cause a “fear-sweat” meter to fill up, and if you stay immobilized for a long time, your character will sneeze loudly and alert the neighbor. The AI in Grimshaw gets smarter according to the times you fail; if you hide in the same spot twice, he will “randomly” check it first, and if you frequently use fireworks, he will begin carrying a fire extinguisher with him. The “lawn-scape” is a half-destructible open world: for example, you can dig tunnels under fences, build makeshift catapults, or even resort to flooding the yard with a garden hose to create mud traps. Each level adds new hazard elements: Grimshaw’s guard dog, a broken sprinkler system that randomly shows your location, and his wife, who sometimes calls him inside for dinner, thus creating temporary safe periods. The “gnome radar” increases the frequency of its signal as you get closer to the gnome, but Grimshaw can also hear it, and he will pursue the sound. Upgrading unlocks “neighbourhood lore” through collectible diary pages that expose Grimshaw’s story (he was defeated by a gnome in a throwing contest) in 1987. The “neighbour war” multiplayer mode lets two players compete; each one is controlling their personal Grimshaw while having to defend their yard and attack the opponent’s.
