The core gameplay of CLOWN is a dread-inducing and asymmetrical game of cat-and-mouse that deeply unsettles players and is thematically based on tragic inevitability and psychological dread. One player takes on the role of a scared child who performs a horrifyingly difficult task in a nightmare world. That is to locate all the balloons that are scattered in the house, a house that is both dilated and labyrinthine, and then secure them in a car outside before the Clown, the source of trouble, can stop them. The child’s game, in the meantime, is a pied-a-terre of the child’s weakness, where the child is expected to use the frightened running, hiding in the closet or under the bed and calmly with his breathing, and limited use of the stash of toys like sling for short stun or whoopee cushion as a sound distraction to get a limited, but precious escape time.

On the other hand, the Clown lacks the force of not outright speed but goes on with the help of his tools and his tactic, which is nothing but a slow, oppressive and terrifying method of dealing with the issue; he can teleport from one reflection of the mirror to another, releasing a low, harsh laugh to disorient the victim, setting a jack-in-the-box free to get the hidden places or simply go on using the slow-bounce of a nightmare without looking back to stop even for a second.

The real wonder of CLOWN’s concept is its opposite power relations design: the kid’s victory is a wild, momentary getaway, whereas the Clown’s victory is not just a hold, but a forced, permanent “adoption,” a terrifyingly dark ending giving the feeling of fighting against a deeply personal and inescapable fear each time a game is played.
