Carmageddon: Rogue Shift throws the vehicular combat genre into a chaotic, run-based roguelite where each dip into the randomly twisted ruins of a fallen city is a gamble to keep your jury-rigged “Beater” alive long enough to get the next destructive upgrade. The gameplay loop is highly physical, consisting of the player violently acquiring and immediately adapting: you keep on driving in the face of corrupted law-enforcement drones and insane rival drivers attacks, turning their wreckage into scrap that is used to fuel quick repairs and weapon changes, all the time handling a critical “Mayhem Meter” that rewards letting go of close-quarters fighting with some temporary nitro bursts and damage resistance. After every fast race or fight in a survival arena, you go back to your mobile chop shop where you can weld on more armour plates, replace your roof-mounted harpoon with a cluster-mine launcher, or spend scrap on mysterious black-market “Rogue Shift” crates that could either give you a powerful railgun or cause an instant environmental meltdown. The persistent meta-progression mainly shapes the identity of each run: your Beater keeps the part you salvaged and unlocks new chassis like the agile “Splatter” or the bulky “Crusher”, while a dynamic “Notoriety” system makes it so that the more havoc you wreak, the deadlier the rivals and law enforcement that the AI will send to stop your fun.
