Call of Juarez: The Cartel really a big change from the series’ Wild West roots, as it is the crime thriller of today with a fresh 3-character format. Choosing one among DEA agent Kim Evans, LAPD detective Eddie Guerra, or ex-cartel enforcer Ben McCall, the story of the campaign gains through the different perspectives that each character has their playstyles—Evans is good with precision and stealth, Guerra is strong in speed and aggression, while McCall is like the heavy who gives one big firepower from close quarters. The gaming melds cover-based shooting with high-speed chases, firework-like scenes, and morally ambiguous choices that affect the story.

The co-op multiplayer feature provides the opportunity for two friends to be together, competitive aspects like scoring systems, and the chance of betrayal add to the fun. The urban settings—from Los Angeles, brightly lit by neon, to the dry land of the border with Mexico—are full of places to take cover and things to use as dangers to the enemy, hence the shootouts become more violent. The Cartel, though it was not very popular with fans because of its change in the main tone of the game, is still going to the new narrative-driven action beats that come together with its gunfights and go far from the past and similar genre titles of the time.
