Call of Duty 1 (2003) altered first-person shooters beyond belief by its explosive, movie-like play that engaged players so profoundly in the war that they couldn’t get their breath back. It significantly differed from other games of the same genre by employing squad-based tactics, where AI teammates not only talked with you but also actively fought alongside you, hence the feeling of being a small part of the whole battle instead of a lone wolf. The AI was reasonably intelligent for its time; thus, enemies were seen hiding, flanking, and also using grenades to make the player feel uncomfortable. The fact that the only way to regain health in the game was by using medkits instead of a regenerating system has contributed to the need for careful moves, as each firefight has become a desperate fight for survival. By marrying scripted, cinematic sequences and spontaneous combat, Call of Duty 1 stands tall as the trailblazer for current military shooters, still delivering a thrilling and breath-catching WWII experience.
